3 Secrets to Achieving Your Goals in 2018
Posted: January 10, 2018
We’re almost 2 weeks into the New Year – how are you doing on your goals / resolutions?
Hopefully you’re rocking, if not – you know what you need to do!
Today I wanted to share 3 tips for you to smash your goals in 2018.
Tip #1 – Know EXACTLY what you’re trying to achieve.
It may sound simple, but this gets screwed up all the time.
Let me explain…
One of the most common New Years goals is to lose weight / get in shape.
Here’s the problem – how are you measuring that?
You have to be specific.
I’m going to lose X pounds…
I’m going to be a size X…
I’m going to be able to run 3 miles without stopping…etc.
In our martial arts classes it’s very easy for us to see fitness improvements because:
1) It’s visual – you can see/feel your skills improving.
2) There is a Fitness Test component to our rank system.
Whatever your goal is make sure it’s specific and measurable.
Tip #2 – Make A Plan
Once you have the specific outcome you want, now you have to figure out your plan to get there.
If you really think about it, goal setting is really just a matter of answering 3 questions.
What do I want?
When do I want it by?
How the heck am I going to get it?
Here’s a pro tip – find someone who has already achieved what you’re trying to accomplish and ask them.
Many goals are abandoned because the plan was flawed from the beginning.
Our minds need to experience progress to justify changes in our behavior.
When I first started lifting weights my motivation was very high the first 3 weeks. By week 4 I was starting to get bored. I hated weeks 5 – 7.
Then something incredible happened in Week 8.
During week 8 our coach had us “max out”. Which was basically measuring how much we could lift for 1 repetition on 3 specific exercises.
I shocked myself.
I couldn’t believe how much I had improved in a short 2 months.
After that I was hooked.
When forming your plan remember this – an expert can:
1. Get you results
2. Save time, energy, and money.
For example: If you have kids and you want them to improve their confidence & discipline – we can absolutely help you get that result. We achieve this on a daily basis.
Tip #3 – Do it
Procrastination is the ultimate dream killer.
Ask yourself this question:
If not now…when?
When you drive home from work are all the lights green?
Probably never.
The timing will never be right.
There will always be obstacles and delays.
That’s life.
But if you don’t start now – when?
There’s an old Chinese proverb that says:
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”
If you’re thinking about martial arts classes the best time to start is now.
